My So-Called Life Archive

  • Season 1 Episode 10 Airdate: November 3, 1994 I’ve previously talked about how much longer MSCL episodes are compared to TV shows today, due to the increase in commercial breaks. While watching this episode, I timed the credits. They are 1 minute, 6 seconds long. That’s unprecedented now. Most series don’t even have proper theme songs anymore! Ginger’s friends are over to raid her refrigerator because they are teenagers so love to eat. Hippie Friend even swipes a bottle of beer. But then Ginger’s mother and little sister enter the house and catch them. Gay Friend was holding the bottle,...0March 28, 2012

    My So-Called Life: 1.10 “Other People’s Mothers”

  • Season 1 Episode 9 Airdate: October 27, 1994 Ginger stares at a jack-o-lantern and tells us she worshipped Halloween when she was little. “It’s your one chance all year to be someone else,” says the girl who dyed her hair and changed all her friends a few months ago. Lil Ginger, her sister, needs a costume for school and she needs it that morning. It’s Halloween today. Ginger suggest she, “Be a pain the butt since you are.” ‘I’d be you,” Lil Ginger retorts, “but nobody could find a mask that ugly.” If this was a TGIF sitcom, those lines...0March 18, 2012

    My So-Called Life: 1.09 “Halloween”

  • Season 1 Episode 8 Airdate: October 20, 1994 The episode begins at the print shop that Ginger’s mom owns and Ginger’s dad is her Gal Friday. Ginger’s dad has to go land a new account, Allegany Systems. He thinks it will be a tough sell as they, “Could go with any printer in town.” There are towns with more than one print shop? They get a phone call. It sounds serious. We go to school. Ex-Bestie is taken out of class. Ginger peeks through the doorway and sees Ex-B in the hallway talking to Ginger’s dad.  She must an executive...0March 4, 2012

My So-Called Life: 1.08 “Strangers in the House”

  • Season 1 Episode 7 Airdate: October 6, 1994 The episode begins with the viewers subjected to Ginger’s bad teenage poetry about love. Ah man. She tells us she always imagined that she would “fall in love nursing a blind solider who was wounded in battle.” Too bad she is part of that lucky generation that wouldn’t get sent to any wars. Bloody Gen-Xers, what do you have to be so jaded about? You’ll all be 40 by 9/11. Elsewhere in the house, the mom asks the dad if she looks fat. Uh oh! Don’t answer that dad, you’re falling into...0February 20, 2012

My So-Called Life: 1.07 “Why Jordan Can’t Read”

  • Season 1 Episode 6 Airdate: September 29, 1994 English class is crazy today! There has been no teacher for several days, so the kids are playing basketball to TLC music. Then the new teacher enters. It’s Jon Lovitz and we are in the 1996 comedy High School High! No, actually the teacher is a substitute, a 50-year-old British Christopher Walken. He talks like Christopher Walken but with a British accent. Maybe when he wanted to move to the USA, he rented a bunch of movie that all featured Christopher Walken, so it’s how he thought Americans talk. Or maybe he...0February 10, 2012

My So-Called Life: 1.06 “The Substitute”

  • Season 1 Episode 5 Airdate: September 22, 1994 At school, Ginger watches her ex-Best Friend get kissed on the head by a boy. Ginger is jealous she had no one to wet her noggin. “So Sharon’s life is developing in this natural healthy way,” Ginger narrates, “while my life is clogged.” Like her pores! In class, Ginger looks into her compact and sees a zit on her chin! Oh no one pimple! How ever will she cope!!! In English class, the instructor is discussing Kafka and “The Metamorphosis”.  “Can you give me an example of something Kafkaesque?” asks the teacher....1January 27, 2012

My So-Called Life: 1.05 “The Zit”

  • Season 1 Episode 4 Original Airdate: September 15, 1994 Time to get back to my MSCL reviews. I started this project in 2010 and only did three episodes before abandoning it because I don’t really like this show. Here is episode 4. We begin with a flashback to when Ginger was a little girl and blonde and excited when her dad came home from work. Now she is a teenager and ginger and hides away when he comes home. That’s weird. I get that this show is trying to the capture the zeitgeist of the American teen in the early...3January 13, 2012

My So-Called Life: 1.04 “Father Figures”

  • Season 1 Episode 3 Airdate: September 8, 1994 In class, the kids are watching a speech by President Kennedy. Wannabe Ginger talks to us about how Baby Boomers have a collective boner for JFK while her generation doesn’t have a big event like the Kennedy assassination. She will in 2001, but whatever. Some girls pass notes in class. They are very obvious about the note passing. The teacher just doesn’t care. Pink Shirt (note: he is not wearing a pink shirt today) has to go to the bathroom. In the hallway, he sees some boys picking on Gay Friend and...0April 8, 2011

My So-Called Life: 1.03 “Guns and Gossip”

  • Season 1 Episode 2 Airdate: September 1, 1994 Unlike the pilot, which had no theme song, there is an opening theme sequence to begin this episode. All of the footage is taken from the first episode. I guess they only filmed one episode before they had to turn in an opening sequence to ABC. It sorts of acts like a flashback to the previous episode. You can watch it and be like, “Hey remember how awesome that first episode was?” Ginger tells us she has only been kissed three times. That’s pretty good for a 15-year-old. Unless two of those...0March 1, 2011

My So-Called Life: 1.02 “Dancing in the Dark”

  • Season 1 Episode 1 Airdate: August 25, 1994 I’ve never watched My So-Called Life. I find that people who are five years or more older than me tend to be nostalgic about this show, but I was in elementary school when it aired and didn’t even know it existed until about four years ago. People who were in high school and college during the 90s can look back on that decade and remember this show and all the great music. When I think back to the 90s, I mostly remember Nickelodeon. I sometimes feel a little jealous toward Generation X...0November 8, 2010
